A bride has been left torn over the decision to remove her
own mum from the wedding after her inappropriate speech - but others say it was
justified after the "nasty personal attack"
A bride is facing
backlash from her own family after her mum was kicked out of the wedding when
the contents of her speech left guests in stunned silence.
She
explains that she was unsure about letting her mum speak at the celebration due
to their "strained relationship" but remembered it went off without a
hitch when she spoke at her sister's nuptials.
However, she later found out her sister had pre-approved her mum's speech - and
was left wishing she had done the same.
The bride
said her mum reeled off a series of jokes, pausing after each one to allow the
punchline to land and being met with a room of silence, before eventually the
microphone was taken away from her.
Comments
included: "I’m happy [the bride] found someone that's not into looks,
because I don’t know how she would have afforded plastic surgery
otherwise", with the woman adding her mum has made judging comments about
her appearance since she was a child.
She told
the groom she hopes he will be happy in a "cr***y apartment" because
her daughter would never be able to afford anything better.
The
bride's mum also said: "Good for [the groom] for putting up with the
bride’s gross medical issues, bet he wouldn’t have been interested if she had
been diagnosed before they got together!" - before going on to share
personal details of a chronic illness the bride was diagnosed with a year
previously.
When her
mum referred to her as "damaged goods", citing a bad incident which
happened when she was a teenager, a groomsman pulled the microphone away from
her and the band began to play.
She says
the rest of her friends and family did a brilliant job of carrying on as
normal, not letting it spoil the big day and the bride didn't see her mum for
the rest of the evening.
The
following morning she discovered the groomsmen had not only cut her speech
short, but had forced her to leave after the bride said she would ignore her
all night.
She said:
"I haven’t heard the end of it since. My mom says I humiliated her. My
family says that I should have just prepared myself because I "know how
she is".

"They say I was wrong to
deprive a mother of her daughter’s wedding. At first, I was certain that her
leaving was justified. Now, I feel like I should have expected the speech and
warned the wedding party early to grin and bear it.
"On the other hand, if my
husband’s dad had delivered a similar speech, I would have dragged him out
myself."
After asking if she had been in the
wrong on Reddit, one person replied to say: "YOU humiliated HER? I don't
think so. It's one thing to crack bad jokes, but that's something for friends
to do, not your mom. And those weren't jokes, those were nasty personal
attacks."
Another wrote: "If your mom was
'just being herself' then she might need a few harsh lessons about how to
behave in society."
